10:15 - 11:15am | | Dissing the Disability Myth Presenter: Kristin Kolin, Associate Director/Counselor, Disability Services, UNC Charlotte | | This interactive presentation will focus on dispelling myths surrounding disabilities and how to break down barriers and raise awareness by including individuals with diverse abilities. | | | And Now What?...Critical Thinking for the New Leader Presenter: Kristen McManus-Withers, Associate Director, Academic Initiatives for Mentoring Students (AIMS) | | It is 2007 and time for a shift in the way we think about problems and more importantly how to address problems. These are tumultuous times and undoubtedly leaders will be called upon to use their ability to bring about order. Typically when these situations arise, leaders are swift to rally the cause and bring attention to it. But once the social ills has been exposed and a form of demonstration has been exercised, no one stops to ask what has really been accomplished. This workshop will focus on critical thinking skills to no simply see and address the problem. Rather to understand the issue and "think outside the box" to find an effective and lasting resolution. | | | Understanding Multicultural Conflict in Leadership Development: A cross-cultural simulation. Presenter: Gene Edwards, Ph.D, Psychologist, UNC Charlotte | | Utilizing a cross-cultural simulation exercise the presenter will induce the "shock" of realizing that in spite of many similarities, people from other cultures have differences in the way they do things. One has to understand and reconcile these differences in order to function effectively in multicultural groups. | | | "I'm Not Too Sensitive" Recognizing and Responding to Unintentional Racism In a Multicultural World Presenter: Lynelle Ragland, Ph.D, Licensed Psychologist, UNC Charlotte | | This workshop will look at different forms of unintentional racism in the school/work environment, with the following goals in mind: To recognize our own patterns of well-meaning, but subtle slights that affect others To validate the experiences of those who have experienced subtle forms of racism To examine the psychological effects of unintentional racism To learn effective ways to address incidents when they occur, and to learn ways to hold ourselves accountable for our own unintentional racism. | | | “I’m not Chinese!” Presenter: Malaya Sap, Fund Development Strategist | | You see many faces as you walk across campus for classes. Some are familiar, some unknown, some dark, some light, and many ethnic and racial groups: Black, White, Hispanics, and Chinese. Wait…correction; Asian not Chinese. The Asian community is comprised of many beautiful nationalities. Chinese is just one group. Attend this interactive workshop to acclimate yourself with the Asian communities and know the difference between the groups. | | | Title: Transgender Issues: Leadership in Advocacy Presenter: Jessica A. Walker, Ph.D., Staff Psychologist, UNC Charlotte | | In this workshop, concepts and terms related to individuals identity as gender-variant or transgendered will be defined and theoretical models will be presented to provide a framework for better understanding gender identity development in today’s rapidly-changing sociocultural context. Do you have a favorite story? What do Swomee-Swans, Truffula Trees, and Star-Bellies have to do with leadership? Come to this session to see how these fictional ideas and characters tie in with your personal leadership style…and have some fun reminiscing over old books at the same time! | | | Taming the Shrew: Assertive vs. Aggressive Presenter: Jennifer Braganza, Lee College of Engineering, UNC Charlotte | | It is a difficult balance between the peacemaker, the leader, the facilitator and the other roles we take on. Terre Lucas, Program Director, Office for Building Educational Strengths & Talents (BEST), UNC Charlotte | | Once we realize that each of us truly is a culture unto ourselves, we may better understand the wisdom behind the saying “Change happens one person at a time.” In attending this session you may learn something that can help you be that “one person” who inspires change and acceptance of others in your circle, on this campus, or wherever you may go! | | | Title: Gender In a Box Presenter: Ted Lewis, Resident Coordinator, UNC Charlotte | | This program will spark a conversation about gender, sex, sexuality and relationships, in society and on a college campus and to provide ways to fight gender stereotypes in everyday life. “Gender in a Box” is an activity that asks students to define stereotypes of gender. | | | Cultural Nourishment: Preparing Future Leaders Presenter: Rosemary Traore, Ph.D, Assistant Professor, Urban Education, UNC Charlotte | | How can we help prepare future leaders from a culturally empowering paradigm rather than “the smog” that Beverly Tatum (1997) describes in her book “Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria”? In this session, there will be a discussion of the African worldview and how it can provide cultural nourishment, as well as the value of reading for cultural nourishment. A list of Afrocentric resources will be provided to make the African/American connection.
